About ECTN

The ECTN(Electronic Cargo Tracking Note) is an indispensable document in international maritime transport, particularly for shipments to several African countries. This system has been set up to :

  • Reinforce import controls.
  • Ensure transparency of logistics processes.
  • Reduce the risks associated with international trade.
  • Facilitate anticipation of customs formalities.

The ECTN provides customs and port authorities with complete visibility of goods in transit to their territory. It includes key information such as :

  • Shippers and consignees (exporters and importers).
  • Details of route and mode of transport.
  • Nature, value and quantity of goods.
  • Freight costs and specific cargo characteristics.

Adopted by many African countries, the ECTN is an essential requirement for any maritime operation. It guarantees better management of imports and rigorous monitoring of cargoes.

How do I get a ECTN?

To obtain a ECTN, the shipper (or his agent) must provide several essential documents, including :

  1. A copy of the bill oflading.
  2. Commercial invoice for goods.
  3. The freight bill
  4. ThePackingList.
  5. Export declaration or other customs documents, if required.

This information must be submitted to an agency accredited by the recipient country, or directly by the sender via his agent (depending on the procedures in force in the country concerned). Once validated, the ECTN is generally issued electronically.

⚠️ Important: The ECTN must be obtained before the shipment arrives in the destination country. In the event of non-compliance, the shipper is liable to financial penalties, the amount of which varies from country to country.
